What is a GRP Flat Roof?
GRP, which stands for Glass Reinforced Polyester and is commonly known as fiberglass, is a single-ply laminate that has been a trusted solution for covering and waterproofing roofs for over 60 years. Its popularity has grown significantly in recent years due to advancements in roofing systems.
The installation of a GRP roofing system is renowned for its simplicity and safety. The finished product offers a lifespan that significantly outlasts traditional felt roofs.
The process begins with a layer of catalyzed resin applied to high-quality, completely dry roof decking—OSB3 wood is ideal. Next, a layer of fiberglass matting is added, followed by another layer of catalyzed resin to complete the system. Once cured, a fire-retardant topcoat resin is applied, ensuring the roof is completely weatherproof and aesthetically pleasing.
At Norton Windows, we are experts in fitting GRP roofing systems, delivering durable and high-quality results every time.
Benefits of GRP roofing
- If installed properly by Norton Windows, it can last up to 50 years
- It has very low-maintenance costs
- GRP roofs are totally waterproof
GRP Roof Systems can be applied to virtually any substrate
GRP flat roofing is a versatile solution that can be applied to almost any roof configuration, including vertical details such as mansards, dormers, sloped roofs, or parapet walls.
In addition to roofing, GRP systems are robust enough for walkways and balconies. They come with BBA certification, meaning the system has undergone rigorous testing to ensure durability and reliability.
The GRP system is also ideal for water containment applications, such as roof gardens, thanks to its completely seamless design. This makes it perfect for green or brown roof gardens. Different GRP manufacturers may specify varying system build-ups; some can even be used as overlay systems when paired with the correct primer, allowing them to be applied over existing mastic asphalt, felt (RBA), or concrete systems.
With reinforced wall and flashing details, GRP roofing not only ensures excellent performance but also delivers a visually appealing finish.
